2020 1ngredient Viognier Ballard Canyon

1ngredient is a project of Beckmen Vineyards in Los Olives, Calif. This amber wine is 100 precent biodynamic Viognier, hand-picked, sorted, and fermented in amphora with ten months of skin contact. After that, it was pressed and aged, then bottled and labeled by hand. There is no sulfite addition, no cultures or other adjuncts, just one ingredient: grapes.

It’s a cloudy coppery amber color and smells like dried peaches, autumn leaves, sultana, and birch wood. The moderately grippy texture and lightly astringent finish accent the wine’s sense of stone fruit, both fresh and dried: peaches, apricot, peach nectar, apricot leather. The finish is long, almost unctuous, but some light volatility lifts up the wine.

A wine for a mixed cheese course if ever there was one.
