2019 Troon Vineyard Amber Kubli Bench Applegate Valley

Textural, savory orange wine from Oregon

2019 Troon Amber Kubli Bench Applegate Valley

Troon’s amber wine is a blend based on Riesling and Vermentino. Farming is organic and biodynamic, and the grapes for this cuvée were managed specifically for orange wine production, in particular given more sun exposure. Each variety was vinified separately with ambient yeast and spent about three weeks on skins. The lots were then blended and the wine aged in neutral French oak for six months. Malolactic was natural.

The result is an orangey-salmon color, a little cloudy but with shiny yellow glints. It exudes a perfume of dried apricots, orange blossom, basil, and something bitter-earthy, like beer. Texturally it’s ample, with a nutty tannic grip and flowery-herbal flavors. Like many orange wines, it’s not so much about fresh fruits as dried fruits and savoriness.

Spirited and interesting, it’s a great bottle to serve with mixed charcuterie.
