It shouldn’t be a surprise when an Old World grape offers up the classic hallmarks its temperament in the New World. This Gewürz is an object lesson in such typicity, with its aromatic profile of spiced apple and baked pears, a pale scent of white petals and honeydew, and something like preserved lemons adding lift. The body is bone dry, shot with a lightning bolt of minerals and a nearly monumental stoniness grounding the finish. It’s not as unctuous or oily as its Alsatian counterpart, but it’s just as generous and savory. Pour it with a mixed cheese course.
