Pfendler’s estate vineyards are situated in a cold, windy part of the Petaluma Gap, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 2,200 feet. Counterintuitively, the highest plot is the warmest, lying as it does above the fog line and thereby enjoying more sun exposure. All sites are dedicated to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
This Chardonnay is pale sunshine yellow. It’s redolent of honeydew and citrus flowers, plus cultured cream steeped with vanilla and spice. Utterly silky, it spreads across the tongue with notes of almond and butter and shiny yellow fruits. A departing shot of tangy lemon juice and bitter herbs enlivens the finish. It’s sunny yet cooling, like a windy day at the shore. Pair it with light meats, medium-aged cheeses, pasta, picnics, pâté.
