2012 Madonna delle Vittorie Brut Trentodoc

Blanc de blancs from the Dolomites

2012 Madonna delle Vittorie Brut Trentodoc

This Chardonnay blanc des blancs was grown in Trento’s Dolomites, whose elevation and calcareous soils can produce spectacular sparkling wines. This traditional method sparkler spends a minimum of three years on lees. This bottle was disgorged in 2018 and was dosed to Brut level at 7 g/L of sugar.

The robe is a pale, moony yellow, and while its mousse is active at first, it quickly subsides into a quiet bead. The aromas are savory, leesy, and wet-stony, with only the faintest lift of fruit. The wine is savory but, surprisingly, given the three years en tirage, has only the faintest hit of nuttiness. I expect another year or two of bottle age will add complexity. The structure certainly suggests it.

Pour it now as a light aperitif wine or pair it with young cheeses, charcuterie, finger food.
