2016 Gallica Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Rosemary Cakebread sources fruit from the Oakville Ranch Vineyard for her Napa Cabernet. The wine is Cab Sauv with a little Cab Franc, and farming is certified organic. The wine is bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

It’s young, still, the color solid dark red velvet with a red rim. It’s fragrant of juniper leaf and berry, rosemary, anise, black currant, black cherry, dried blueberry — yes, a lot going on. The palate segues from fruit to shimmery acidity, and the chewy tannins are well integrated, although the wine finishes in a blaze. Its concentrated mid-section delivers luxuriant black and blue berries, but a thread of greenery (Cabernet’s hallmark) lifts it up.

Ten or fifteen more years of cellaring would be fine.
