Massican’s varietal Chardonnay is made from the musqué clone grown in the Hyde Vineyard, in Carneros, planted in 1992. It’s fermented and aged in French oak. It’s a straw yellow color with greenish cast, and its scent is lemon-salty; there’s also grass, wet stone, and Anjou pear. The palate is silken, and while it has undergone malolactic, the aromatics and acidity keep it balanced. There’s also a pleasing slight woodsy bitterness at the deep finish. This is a savory Chardonnay, admirable as always.
2021 Massican Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard Napa Valley
13% ABV | $55 (sample)
Always a fun contrast to the Ramey. Such different wines, but they both speak of Hyde.
All of Dan’s 2021s seem more tightly wound up than the last two vintages. Patience required.
I agree; they do seem quieter this vintage. Letting them age awhile makes sense.
p.s. did you get a bottle of the 2021 Massican Idlewild?
Hi, no, I haven’t had a chance to taste that wine.
