2018 Domaine des Sanzay Saumur Champigny

Domaine des Sanzay’s Saumur-Champigny is a mercurial wine, youthful but with the stuffing to age. Made from organically farmed Cabernet Franc, it’s rich raspberry-red and fragrant of blackberries, cherries, and thyme. The palate is fruit-driven, but firm, astringent tannins and a candied, somewhat spicy mid palate add dimension. The finish blows off in a sense of spearmint and tarragon. It would benefit from five more years in bottle; pair it now with rich meat preparations (slow-cooked pork shoulder, saucisson sec, grilled beef) or aged cow’s milk cheeses.
