Fruit for Kathleen Inman’s estate Pinot is farmed organically. The grapes were harvested at night, mostly de-stemmed, and fermented with ambient cultures in a mix of stainless and plastic vessels kept below 80℉. Fifteen percent of the wine was whole cluster fermented with carbonic maceration. The wine was pressed after fermentation and moved to oak barrels (30 percent new) and a single concrete egg for aging. It was crossflow filtered before bottling with screw cap. It was not fined and is suitable for vegans.
It’s limpid deep strawberry-garnet with a clear rim and a perfume of of cherries, strawberries, dried rose petals (potpourri), and light oak. Light textured, it has a solid core of strawberry-cranberry fruit that hits in the high register. There is spice and a hint of savoriness, but mostly it delivers a juicy, red-fruit palate impression and, in the deep finish, something like a pomander (orange studded with cloves).
Lively now, but five years of cellaring will reward the patient.
