2013 Santa Barbara Winery Chardonnay Santa Barbara County

“Honeydew and Crenshaw melon, with a welcome grapefruit snap.”

2013 Santa Barbara Winery Chardonnay Santa Barbara County
Fruit for this bottling comes from a mix of cool- and warm-region vineyards, including Los Alamos, Hilltop, Lafond, and Curtis. A soupçon of Chenin Blanc and Riesling often makes it into this blend. In winemaking, some lots are treated to stainless, some to barrel with malolactic fermentation and lees stirring, and the whole is blended back into balance.

The wine is a deep yellow color with chartreuse glints, offering ripe aromas of honeydew and Crenshaw melon. But it has a sourness, too, a lactic quality that countervails these fruits. The body—medium-textured, nicely coating—has a welcome bitter grapefruit snap at the finish. It needs a little air and warmth to unwind.
