Château de Villegeorge

Haute-medoc

Château de Villegeorge
Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
2005

The wine is deep, inky purple, nearly opaque. On the nose it's intense: a little salty, a little funky, kind of like leather that's been ridden hard, with overtones of chocolate, sweet tobacco, pine, rosemary, and black cherry. It smells the way mahogany looks. And the nose is evolving in the glass as I write this, opening, flowering.

It's a little more subtle on the palate, but the flavors are similar: a deep, smoky chocolate, plus cherry and rosemary. The tannins are a little too pronounced, though. It could age, and maybe should. We're probably drinking it too young.

Complex, interesting, engaging, and a little rough at the edges.

Price: $25
Drinks like: $20 (in five years it would be much more)
Bang for the buck: 80%
