This wine is made from the “red stem” cultivar of Refosco (Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso), native to northern Italy and Slovenia and known for forthright tannins and fruity aromatics. In Redentore’s bottling, the fruit is vinified in stainless steel with ambient cultures, and the wine is aged in used French oak barriques. The winemakers add no sulfite.
The result is ruby red, very youthful looking. Aromatically its juicy red fruits get a kiss of woodsy spice, and the palate feels dewy and fresh. The tannins are pronounced but not aggressive, mostly serving as an armature for zesty cranberry-blackberry fruit. It’s a good red for pizza night.
