Selección Especial is an international mashup, a blend of 75 percent Tempranillo, 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10 percent Syrah grown in the winery’s Duero Valley vineyards. The wine spent a little over a year in French and American oak, which imbued it with woodsy notes of cedar and tobacco. The texture is dense, chewy, and chocolaty, but a top-note of black plums and violets contributes lift.
Still, it’s a substantial wine that absolutely demands rich food: roasts, barbecue, smoked meats, cured meats, aged cheeses.
