Stony Hill might be better known for its Riesling and Chardonnay, but their 2014 Cabernet is a succulent, silky offering. It was grown on young vines on a remote hillside in Napa’s Spring Mountain district, and its perfume of cassis and red currants is fey and flowery but sports a vein of earth. The wine’s tannins are modest, while its satiny robe carries a complicated mélange of fruits and savoriness. Elegant and friendly, it’s ready to drink now.

Satiny and ready to drink now are not words I expected to see in a Stony Hill review. Never had their Cabernet, but I would have expected something more structured and in need of extended aging.
It was a bit of a surprise to me, too.
