2014 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Azaya Ranch Marin County

A study in contrasts: fruit vs. wood

2014 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Azaya Ranch Marin County

This Pinot Noir fruit from Azaya Ranch was cold soaked for seven days to draw out color and structure, and the must was punched down a few times daily during fermentation for further extraction. The wine aged 15 months in French oak, half new, before assemblage.

The result is plump and fleshy, with ripe cherries accented with vanilla and pink petals, an intonation of cranberry. But these fruits and flowers are heavily cordoned by wood and baked spices, suggesting the wine was made to age. Right now it’s a study in contrasts. Lay it down for a year or two.
