Artisanal

Colloquial term for wine made following traditional, pre-industrial techniques. Although it has no legal meaning, it generally denotes a wine made using grapes grown on or near the winery that are vinified with limited manipulations or adjustments.

Artisanal has a more specific definition in the world of cheese, indicating a cheese made from milk sourced on the farm or from the farmer’s neighbors. Artisanal cheeses are made following traditional cheesemaking practices for that region and style.
