2016 Kingston Family Vineyards Chardonnay Sabino Casablanca Valley

Light-hearted, juicy Chilean Chardonnay

2016 Kingston Family Vineyards Chardonnay Sabino Casablanca Valley

The Kingston estate is farmed by the fifth generation of Carl John Kingston, who arrived in Chile in 1918 in search of gold. The family holdings in the Casablanca Valley now yield Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and their American import business sells most of its production direct to consumers (viz., modern-day gold).

The bottle is closed with a screw cap and the wine is slightly reductive at first, demanding at least an hour of air. I found it even better on Days Two and Three. Such patience is rewarded by a bracing, wet-stone and lemon oil fragrance seasoned with sage and bay leaf. The palate is lush but savory, with rounded yellow citrus and white peach, a suggestion of pineapple. It finishes in grapefruit pith and lemon drop.

Juicy — almost gushingly so — this is a wine for fish, salads, vegetables, and picnic fare.
