Tasting Green

Gruner

Höpler
Grüner Veltliner
2008
Current price: about $17

Pale greenish gold, the nose is fresh like grass or new-cut hay. On the palate I get gooseberries, light lime citrus, and something underneath that's almost like coconut. It has a bracing, stony finish, but overall it's delicate. Lightly alcoholic—only 11%—it's a relief from the searing, hot whites that dominate the wines we often encounter at this price point. It's nice on an adolescent summer day like today.
