Donnafugata’s Floramundi is a blend of Frappato and Nero d’Avola grown in sandy, calcarious tuff. The 2017 vintage was warm and early, so the growers had to irrigate before harvest. The grapes were vinified in stainless steel and remained tank for eight months, followed by seven months in bottle prior to release.
The result is a a limpid purplish ruby color with a clear rim, youthful-looking and shiny. The wine yields a perfume of spiced fruits and potpourri, rose hips, blackberries, and licorice. Light-textured with moderate tannins, it delivers flavors of bramble and cherrystone before flaming out in a sense of black raspberry. The finish is slightly bitter.
Try it with spicy cuisine; the light tannins, spiced fruit, and acidity will feel seamless.
