2015 La Valentina Spelt Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC

Rambunctious Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

2015 La Valentina Spelt Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva DOC

This Montepulciano was grown on vines up to 40 years old. The fruit was vinified in stainless steel and the wine spent 16 months in a mix of 2,500-liter Slavonian oak casks and new and used barriques. About 5,000 cases were made.

It’s youthful looking, a shiny ruby red with a clear rim, and fragrant of ripe cherry, macerated strawberry, cedar wood, and juniper berry. The palate continues the theme, offering ripe fruits and a sueded tannic texture. The finish is the most interesting aspect of the wine, an interplay of earthy sous bois and tart juicy fruit.

Smart but too young now; at this price most will drink it early, but if you have the patience, age the bottle for a couple of years to let the tarnish of time deepen its interest. If you do open it now, pair it with rich cuisine: sausages, cassoulet, confit of duck, mushrooms browned in butter.
