A blend of native Greek red varieties Limnio, Mavrotragano, and Mavroudi. Liminio, which accounts for half of the blend, is certifiably ancient, mentioned in Aristotle’s play “The Peace” from the 5th Century BCE.
The wine paints a paisley of flowers and minerals against dark velvet, its body daubed with purple fruits and embroidered with fine filaments of spice and resinous herbs. A dark vein of minerality wends through its lower strata. The texture here is drying, a little rough at the edges, and the boxy French oak influence is prominent, but tangy acidity flares at the finish, lifting the wine.
Profound and earthy but juicy, too, it’s a good companion for hearty preparations of game—boar ragù or venison—plus brisket, shanks, aged cheese, porcini.
