Submitting to Terroir Review

Terroir Review is a journal about nature, culture, food, and place. Part food magazine, part literary journal, we aim to tackle important questions about food and its role in culture. Read more about Terroir, including this F.A.Q.

Terroir accepts submissions of previously unpublished writing that illuminates why food matters. We’re particularly interested in personal narratives that explore the author’s perspective on terroir, place, and the cycles of physical and cultural nourishment. We’re less interested in journalistic pieces — producer profiles, travel articles, tasting round-ups, trend pieces, and the like — and more interested in literary essays and criticism that contextualize and shed light on food and place. Photo essays and poetry are also considered.

Guest contributions are collected into the section Terroir Letters. Works may vary in length, and we encourage writers to take the space they need to explore their ideas in depth. On the other hand: Keep us on the edge of our seats.

We read on a quarterly basis, with submissions due on the 21st of March, June, September, and December. We aren’t accepting pitches at this time, only completed manuscripts. We do allow simultaneous submissions, but request that you let us know promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. We pay for all published work and retain exclusive rights for one year, after which the author is free to publish elsewhere provided Terroir Review is cited as first publication.

Please use our contact form to submit your manuscript, pasting the text of your submission into the message body or providing a link to a shared document. We will respond promptly.

We look forward to reading.
