2012 Domaine Mittnacht Frères Riesling Rosacker Grand Cru Alsace

Coating and ample, plumped by citrus fruits

2012 Domaine Mittnacht Frères Riesling Rosacker Grand Cru Alsace

Mittnacht owns and farms a portion of the grand cru Rosacker Vineyard north of the village of Hunawihr. The plot derives its name from the neighborhood’s wild roses. Soils are limestone, and the plot lies at 260 to 330 meters elevation. Farming is organic and biodynamic. This wine was aged on lees in large wooden tanks (foudres).

It’s a sunny yellow color with a floral but solidly Riesling perfume of orange blossoms, lemon oil, and wet rocks. The wine’s texture is big, very coating, with plump quince-like fruits, Mandarin orange, and soft acidity. But the mid-palate and finish are dominated by crunchy minerals, which give the wine its spine.

I want a little more nerve and vitality, but it’s nice with salty cheeses, especially Alp-style.
