2015 Château Carpe Diem Rosé Castille Côtes de Provence
A blend of Grenache and Cinsault, hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed. Made by the family Philipon Vilgrain, owner and producer, in Cotignac. I met Philipon at a tasting in Boston recently, hosted by Wines of Provence, and was taken with his Carpe Diem line. This is a really big wine (check the alcohol) with apple and minty-citrus aromas top-noted by candied red apple skin and ripe strawberry. On the palate it’s ample, recapitulating the apple-strawberry theme, but there is big structure, too, from the alcohol and the red fruits. It’s no wonder it was a standout in a noisy tasting.
